Reddit has been machine-translating its discussions into French since 2024. Google and OpenAI have signed deals to use its content, and Reddit threads are among the sources AI assistants cite most. For a brand, this has two consequences: customers may already be talking about you on Reddit, and 15 of the 31 French-speaking communities in our directory prohibit self-promotion.
This guide to Reddit for brands brings together the self-promotion rules of 31 French-speaking and Belgian subreddits, recorded on October 10, 2026, from each subreddit’s own rules page. You will also find the method for taking part without losing your account, two texts ready to copy and the basic Reddit Ads settings for a small business.
The 2026 Reddit numbers that matter for a brand
In the second quarter of 2026, Reddit averaged 130.3 million daily active users and 514.6 million weekly, according to results published on July 30, 2026. Growth comes mainly from outside the United States: 77.1 million daily users outside the US, up 28% year over year. Of these, 47.6 million browse the site without logging in, a figure up 41%.
In its shareholder letter for the second quarter of 2024, Reddit wrote that machine translation was “broadly available in French,” that France was among its three fastest-growing countries and that the service would expand to Spanish, German and Portuguese. A user in France can therefore read an English-language thread in French.
The deals with search engines and assistants date from the same year. On February 22, 2024, Google announced an expanded partnership: access to Reddit’s Data API, which provides real-time content, and more prominent display of Reddit content in its products. On May 16, 2024, Reddit and OpenAI announced a deal that brings Reddit content into ChatGPT; the deal also provided for OpenAI to become a Reddit advertising partner.
On the assistant side, the analytics company Peec AI published a study on March 31, 2026 covering 30 million sources cited by ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews. Reddit is the most cited domain, first or second on each of the five tools. The study only covers the United States; we found no equivalent published measurement for France as of October 10, 2026.
The practical consequence fits in one sentence. When a prospect asks an assistant which invoicing software to choose, the answer may draw on a Reddit thread where your brand is mentioned, for better or worse. For the AI crawlers that read your own site, see our guide to AI crawlers and the robots.txt file. Our comparison of AI visibility tools helps you check whether assistants cite your brand.

The rules that apply to a brand account
The baseline: Reddit’s rules and consumer law
Reddit publishes eight general rules, enforced by its own teams. The second asks you to respect each community’s rules and to participate authentically where you have a personal stake; it prohibits spam and content manipulation. The fifth prohibits misleading others or impersonating a person or entity. Penalties range from a simple warning to permanent suspension of the account.
Consumer law comes on top of these rules. EU Directive 2005/29/EC lists “falsely representing oneself as a consumer” among the commercial practices considered misleading “in all circumstances” (Annex I, point 22). France transposed it into Article L121-4, 21°, of its Consumer Code, and Belgium in Article VI.100, 22°, of its Code of Economic Law.
An employee who praises their product under a neutral username, or two accounts that recommend each other, break Reddit’s rules and expose themselves to this legal ban. Each community then adds its own rules, which its moderators enforce.
The most common reasons for a ban
Of the 31 communities in the directory, 15 prohibit self-promotion, 3 require moderator approval, 7 allow it under written conditions and 6 have no general rule on the subject. The same grounds for penalties come up from one rules page to the next:
- The new account used only for promotion. r/france announces a permanent ban without warning for “any new empty Reddit account or one dedicated solely to self-promotion,” and r/EntreprendreenFrance bans accounts “created only to promote.”
- The account in the brand’s name. r/france refuses brand-affiliated accounts, “whether through posts or in replies to comments.”
- The link posted without context, removed on r/entrepreneurfrance, r/FrenchTech and r/EntreprendreenFrance.
- The poll or market research form: 16 of the 31 communities prohibit it, restrict it or require moderator approval.
- The referral code, punished with an immediate ban on r/vosfinances.
- The unsolicited private message, targeted by the rules of r/vosfinances and r/QuebecFinance.
- Fake reviews and fake comparisons: r/FrenchTech and r/QuebecTI explicitly prohibit astroturfing.
- AI-written text, prohibited or restricted in eleven communities on the list, including r/AskFrance, r/Quebec, r/montreal, r/conseiljuridique and r/developpeurs. r/france requires you to tell readers when an AI wrote a comment, and r/MarketingFR accepts AI-assisted text if it has been reworked.
The doors that stay open
A community that prohibits self-promotion still leaves openings for a business. The rules point to four of them.
The first is the dedicated thread. r/EntreprendreenFrance posts a thread every Wednesday to present your project and ask for feedback, and every Monday a “looking for guinea pigs” thread for beta testers. r/BEFire always accepts links to your site in its weekly thread. r/france tolerates, as an exception, the promotion of a personal project by an active account, in the open forum or in a dedicated post.
The second is moderator approval. r/Lyon accepts commercial self-promotion after prior approval, r/Wallonia requires moderator approval for promotional content, and r/suisse invites you to write to the moderators when in doubt. On r/immobilier, you can message the moderators to have a 100% free tool listed in the wiki.
The third is transparency. r/FrenchTech requires you to state your connection to the product, with this example: “I’m the founder of…”. r/StartInBelgium asks you to disclose your involvement and explain the feedback you want.
The fourth is contribution. r/developpeurs accepts the presentation of an open source project if you have already taken part in the subreddit. r/MarketingFR allows promotion that “gives direct value to members.”
That leaves the widest door: answering a question in your field, with no link and no mention of your offer. None of the 31 rules pages prohibits this for a personal account, with one limit on r/france, which refuses any participation by a brand-affiliated account.
The directory of French-speaking subreddits and their self-promotion rules
The selection covers the large general communities of France, Belgium, French-speaking Switzerland and Quebec, five cities, and the topics where a business has something to say: entrepreneurship, tech, money, law, jobs, consumer goods. The English-language Belgian communities are included, because a Belgian brand meets its customers there.
Method: on October 10, 2026, for each community we opened its rules page (the /about/rules address), its sidebar and, when the rules point to it, the wiki page devoted to the rules. The table mainly summarizes the sentences about self-promotion, advertising, polls, referrals and private messages, and flags another useful rule when the community has none on self-promotion. The status is our reading of those sentences.
A community with no general rule on the subject is still subject to Reddit’s rule against spam. The number of readers is the counter shown on the classic version of the site (old.reddit.com), rounded. We left out communities with fewer than 1,000 readers. Moderators change their rules without notice: reread the page before every post. We plan to recheck every line each quarter and update the date.

Taking part without getting banned, step by step
- Choose the account. Use the personal account of a real person in the company, with a history of participation. Reddit also offers Reddit Pro, presented as free on its Reddit for Business page as of October 10, 2026: a business profile, keyword tracking (your brand, your products, your competitors) and statistics on your posts and comments. Check that it is available for your account, and remember that a brand account is still excluded from r/france.
- Listen before you write. Search Reddit for your brand, your competitors and your customers’ questions for two weeks. Read the rules page, the wiki and the pinned posts of each community you are targeting. Jobs To Be Done interviews with your recent customers round out this listening.
- Contribute without links. Answer questions in your field with complete answers. r/france and r/developpeurs take an account’s past participation into account before tolerating a presentation.
- Disclose your connection as soon as you mention your offer, in the same sentence, even for disinterested advice.
- Keep links for dedicated threads and for the communities that allow them. Elsewhere, ask the moderators for approval before posting.
- Answer criticism on the substance, stating your role. The thread will stay online, and a prospect or their assistant will read your reply there too.
- Measure. Add UTM parameters to the links you are allowed to post, to isolate traffic from Reddit in your analytics tool.
The principles of community management stay the same as on other platforms; our article on community building and community management covers them in detail.
Two texts to copy
The first text is for a comment, when your product is relevant to the question asked. Adapt the brackets and keep the disclosure at the top of your reply.
Transparency: I work at [Company], which sells [product]. I'm answering in a personal capacity.
If I were you, I'd look at [concrete criterion] first. [Your advice, including when it leads to a solution other than yours.]
The second text is for communities where self-promotion requires moderator approval (“With approval” status in the directory). Send it through the moderators’ messaging (modmail), from the account that will post.
Subject: request for approval before posting
Hello,
I'm [first name], [job title] at [company], [business] in [city]. I've been taking part in r/[community] with this account for [length of time].
I would like to post [description: a free guide, a free tool, an offer for members only]. The post would contain [a single link / no link] and would clearly state my connection to the company.
Your rule "[rule title]" requires your approval. Would this be acceptable, and in what form would you prefer to see it?
Thank you for your time,
[first name]
Reddit Ads settings and test budget for a small business
Reddit Ads follows the usual ad platform structure, the same one as Meta, which has been testing conversational campaign creation with its AI assistant since October 6, 2026. The campaign carries the objective and an optional spending cap, the ad group carries the targeting, the schedule and the bid, and the ad carries the creative. Every ad is reviewed before it runs: Reddit says review generally takes up to 48 business hours, and an ad submitted on the weekend is reviewed on Monday.
There are two placements: the feed (home, popular and community feeds) and conversations, meaning the comments page, between the post and the first comment. One option lets you allow comments under the ad; if you use it, plan for someone to answer them. Brand safety settings exclude communities or keywords.
A community’s rules govern its members’ posts. Paid ads go through Reddit’s ad platform, and r/QuebecTI in fact points businesses to “ad campaigns.”
Three ways to target
Reddit offers three kinds of targeting. Interests group 20 broad categories, from animals to travel. Community targeting reaches members of a subreddit and people who have visited it in the last 28 days, wherever they browse on Reddit afterward. Keyword targeting places the ad near content that contains your terms.
Two limits matter for a French-speaking brand, according to Reddit’s help center as of October 10, 2026. Keyword targeting only accepts terms in English. And not every community is open to advertising: if a subreddit does not appear when you type its name, it is probably not eligible.
Reddit advises starting with interests and, with community targeting, putting at least 15 communities in each ad group. For a French-speaking small business, community targeting is still the easiest to understand: r/vosfinances and r/QuebecFinance for a broker, r/cuisine for a cookware brand, if those communities are eligible. With fewer than 15 eligible communities in French, turn on automatic targeting expansion or add interests.
How much to budget for a first test?
Reddit’s help center recommends a daily budget of at least 50 dollars per ad group, or about 45 euros at the ECB reference rate of October 9, 2026 (1 euro for 1.1206 dollars). For a test campaign, it advises at least two ad groups and at least four weeks of delivery. A test with two groups over 28 days therefore comes to about 2,500 euros. To reach a specific professional audience on a smaller budget, a placement in a newsletter in your industry is another option: see how the price of a newsletter sponsorship is set.
Reddit advises a lifetime budget when the budget is small, and a daily budget to avoid underdelivery. The budget type cannot be changed once the ad group is saved: choose it before you launch.
Measuring with the pixel, the Conversions API and UTMs
For a sales or leads campaign, Reddit relies on its pixel or its Conversions API. Without one of them, only click optimization is available, and the pixel and conversion event you choose cannot be changed afterward. Install the pixel before launch, add UTMs to the destination URL and compare the conversions Reddit reports with those in your own analytics tool.
Like any advertising pixel, Reddit’s must respect your visitors’ choice in your consent banner. The same questions come up for advertising in assistants; our article on advertising in ChatGPT covers them for OpenAI.
Three typical cases for an agency, an online store and a local business
An SEO agency based in Lille wants to build awareness among entrepreneurs. Its founder answers from his personal account in r/EntreprendreenFrance and r/MarketingFR, and describes his work in his profile description. He shares a case study in the Wednesday thread of r/EntreprendreenFrance and stays out of r/lille, where commercial self-promotion is broadly prohibited. For advertising, he uses community targeting on the eligible entrepreneur and marketing subreddits.
A Belgian cookware brand sells online. r/cuisine prohibits advertising or affiliate links and self-promotion, even without a commercial purpose, and r/brico holds the same line. So the brand limits itself to listening: it tracks its name and its competitors’ names, and answers after-sales questions when a customer mentions it, stating its role. To sell, it goes through Reddit Ads, with the “Food & Drink” interest (the label in Reddit’s help center) and the pixel installed before launch.
A restaurant in Lyon is opening a second location. r/Lyon accepts commercial self-promotion with prior moderator approval: the manager sends the second text above before announcing the opening. When a member asks for a recommendation, he lets his customers answer; if he steps in, he says it is his restaurant. In Lille, Brussels and Montreal, the rules prohibit commercial promotion, and in Paris any blatant promotion, so local visibility is won elsewhere, starting with local SEO.
Before your first post
Reread the community’s rules page on the day you post and check that your account has a history of participation. Prepare the sentence that discloses your connection to the company and keep links for dedicated threads. Reddit is just one channel among others: our guide to organic marketing covers the rest.
To prepare your Reddit plan (communities to target, rules to reread, test budget) with an assistant you run from Telegram, in French, English or Dutch, see the MACCUS AI assistant.
